Understand your lab’s current labor productivity opportunities.
Often times Hospital COO’s engage our firm to evaluate their lab’s labor productivity because they find themselves faced with conflicting views on how efficient a lab should be running. On one hand, labor productivity data they subscribe to tells them their labs ought to be twice as productive as they are but their Lab Director’s provide reasons for keeping staff at current levels.
Develop your unique plan of action with seasoned practitioners.
As lab experts, we know what an efficient lab looks like and we know where the inefficiencies are. One of the things we pride ourselves in is our honest assessment and our ability to partner with Lab Directors. It is through the mutual regard and our collective experience that we bring a level of assurance to both the C-suite and the director’s chair. Many times our clients find themselves concerned over making process changes afraid that a change might sacrifice quality or service. Change is not everyone’s friend but we have helped our clients successfully implement huge productivity enhancements time after time.
Offering solutions that enhance productivity without sacrificing quality of care.
In one of our most recent client engagements, the client had eliminated roughly a dozen lab positions the year before bringing us in. While this was done with good intentions and by an outside consulting firm with impeccable credentials, the problem was that the consultant they used had no laboratory operating experience. The result of the layoff put the department into a state of disarray. After a brief engagement as interim management we made a number of recommendations to the client including the addition of 14 positions. While most of our engagements do see a reduction in staff, we are not a slash and burn firm. We understand that Phlebotomy, Microbiology, Molecular, Anatomic Pathology and Blood Bank have different productivity metrics than automated Chemistry, Hematology and UA. We also understand that benchmark data is only one data point. Each client situation has to be viewed separately and with a healthy dose of lab knowledge.
