In one of our most recent client engagements, the client had eliminated roughly a dozen lab positions the year before bringing us in. While this was done with good intentions and by an outside consulting firm with impeccable credentials, the problem was that the consultant they used had no laboratory operating experience. The result of the layoff put the department into a state of disarray. After a brief engagement as interim management we made a number of recommendations to the client including the addition of 14 positions. While most of our engagements do see a reduction in staff, we are not a slash and burn firm. We understand that Phlebotomy, Microbiology, Molecular, Anatomic Pathology and Blood Bank have different productivity metrics than automated Chemistry, Hematology and UA. We also understand that benchmark data is only one data point. Each client situation has to be viewed separately and with a healthy dose of lab knowledge.
